William served as a Private in Company "H" of the 4th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted 30 Aug 1861, mustered in 18 Sep 1861, re-enlisted 26 Feb 1864 and was served until 1865. He served in the same company as his twin brother Christopher who was killed in May, 1864 at Drewry's Bluff, just north of Petersberg, Va.
